Phoenician Architecture

Phoenician Architecture in Tyre

Phoenician was grand and it wasn’t when it came to architecture.  If you compared them to Rome and Greece you would probably say Greece and Rome.  Still the Phoenician Architecture was pretty nice from their palaces and their ports they did a pretty good job.

Form

One there most common building was with clay or mud bricks.  There design was close to the Egyptians and some what toward Sumer and Babylon.  They also used columns for their great temples and palaces.  Since a lot of there cities were scattered across the Mediterranean its hard what object or supplies they used to build there structures.  They mainly used the native rock of the region to build their houses.  Then as time progressed they eventually started using more Greek architecture.  In their houses they didn’t have.  Also they used wood in their houses.  A certain type of stone they used was limestone since it was abundant across the Mediterranean.

Connection

It was close to the Egyptian/Middle Eastern architecture.  Also you may find their architecture style mainly in the modern world in the Middle east, Africa, Parts of southeast asia.  Their houses were built with an all natural air conditioning.  Later they based their design of the Roman and Greek Style.  They were known for helping the Hebrews build King Solomon’s Temple.

Function

As we know the mediterreanaen was a pretty hot place winter and summer so they used a style of architecture which get cool air in hot air out.  Now this idea worked by using clay/bricks, now when you built a house like this you were smart.  The process works like this the clay keeps the hot air out but keeps the cool in.  Also they used wood in their houses

Conclusion

Their design was always under influence from other civilizations.  Their designs were always quite simple so when it came to architecture the Phoenicians didn’t really know the idea of originality in architecture.
